– Lancaster City Council

Lancaster City Council is proud of it’s Cycling Town status and is working hard to encourage its own staff to swap four wheels for two – for journeys within work as well as those to and from. We have recently put in place a number of initiatives for our staff for example an interest free bike loan and a free bike service – for full details see below.

Cycling for Business

Many Council staff attend meetings at the various site we have around the District with mose being within 5 miles of each other. These journeys can easily be made by bike, whether you use a free Pool Bike or your own. Don’t forget that you can also claim Bike Mileage at 36.4p per mile for work journeys made by bike. Travelling by bike around the District is easy and you’ll be surprised at just how quickly you can reach your destination.

Cycle to Work Scheme

Lancaster City Council has teamed up with Cyclescheme to offer the Cycle to Work Scheme which allows staff to obtain a cycle at a discount of between 30% and 50% on the retail price of a new bike and accessories.  Full details of the scheme can be found on the intranet at http://ofsintranet/cycletowork (accessible only from LCC computers).

If you wish to apply through the scheme we strongly advise you to read the information on the intranet before proceeding.  You can apply for a bike through the scheme from any computer – you will need to click ‘Request a Voucher’ at http://www.cyclescheme.co.uk/914598.  Note, Lancaster City Council’s employer code is 914598

FREE Bike Service

We have teamed up with local bike mechanic Colin Stones (aka Dr. Bike) who will collect your bike from home (or work), check it over and make basic repairs and then return it you.

To take advantage of this service staff should email the Cycling Town team with full details including office and mobile phone numbers

During May 2010 the 100th member of staff had their bike serviced for free! Here is a selection of comments received:

"What an excellent service he provided, I can highly recommend it. Many thanks."

"He’s done a really good job on it. I shall be using it one day next week."

"Just to let you know that I have had my bike service, it has come back like a new bike. Collin did an excellent job and very quick."
