Bike It

Bike Itis a nationwide scheme which aims to increase the number of young people cycling to school and on other journeys. Schools are selected for their enthusiasm for cycling and the potential to increase cycling.

The Bike It project started in 2004/5 with just four Bike It Officers based in Derby, York, Manchester and Bristol. They worked with 40 schools in over 11 local authorities. There are now around 20 Bike It Officers in England.

Based on end of year bike shed counts cycling levels have quadrupled in the Bike It schools. You can find out lots more here

Introducing our Bike It Officer(s)

"Hi – I’m Kathy Bashford, the Bike It Officer for the Lancaster area and I am here to encourage cycling to school.

I’m excited to be involved in both the Cycle Demonstration Town project and the Sustrans Bike It project. I am enjoying seeing lots more children cycling to school in the Lancaster area and hope they will now continuing cycling into old age..!"

"I’m Annie, I job share with Kathy as Bike It Officer. The best things about working with the Cycle Demonstration Town project have to be seeing the fun that children have during Bike It events and activities, and seeing the results of the project in the large number of bikes parked outside Bike It schools. Cycling has so many obvious benefits, and promoting cycling to children – who invariably love to ride bikes – has to be the best job in the world!’

‘We are employed by Sustrans and work closely with the Cycle Town team and County Council School Travel Plan Advisors.’
