Re: Women's Cycling Shoes
Posted by: Celebrating Cycling

  OFFERED
Pair of women's Specialized Sonoma cycling shoes.

Size 8 (but would be fine for a 7 I think) - worn but in v.good condition

See them at www.celebratingcycling.org/images/sonoma.jpg

Offered free but some biscuits for the team would be nice.

Contact us at celebratingcycling@lancaster.gov.uk

For a subtle, about town look, the Specialized Sonomas are a perfect choice; their sole has an inverse tread, with holes cut into the sole rather than raised grips, and even though the sole looks a bit smooth it’s fine for off the bike, though probably more for walking on pavements than rocky paths.

The sole's pretty stiff too, so though the Sonomas wouldn’t be a first choice for a hike’n’bike, for pure cycling they’re great.

Two Velcro closures mean quick fastening, but if your feet are on the wide side, or you have a high instep, you might struggle to get a firm fastening with the shortish straps. Ours came undone while walking.

The leather toe offers extra protection, which is nice, though they could do with some reflectives, especially as they’re aimed at city riding.

Re: Drivers - check your mirrors before opening your door!

Fair play to the cyclist I saw giving a telling off to the driver who opened his door into her path this evening! And shame on you Mr Driver! I was driving past the pub opposite the old cinema and had seen this car pull over and park up outside the Chinese, parking in the red cycle lane on double yellow lines I may add - never a PC around when you need one! He opened his door without checking his mirrors and nearly took this cyclist out. As I passed I saw the cyclist giving him a finger wagging and rightly so. It could have ended up so much worse.

Re: canal path

last year twice i contacted the council and sent a letter asking for the canal access at ridge hill bridge to be changed to have a ramep part as i often cycle to work with my two young boys to firbank nursery as they are quite young they both sit in a cycle trailer behind my bike getting from the canal path up the nine steps is near impossible, surely the same problem for wheel chairs prams mobility scooters. although again i am reporting this i very much doubt any action will be taken again. and no taking my boys out is not an option they are only 3 and 20 months old

Re: bad cyclists

I frequently use the path from Glasson to Lancaster either cycling or walking my dog.

On sudnay I was walking the dog and it was more crowded than usual.

Several cyclists simply whizzed up behind with no audible warning and went past inches away. When I asked one why he had no bell I got a torrent of farmyard french.

Behaviour like this does us cyclists no good.

Response from Lancashire County Council re the above path:
"A stone surface was used on the path as when we consulted local people they did not want it tarmaced, and a stone surface is more in keeping with the rural nature of the path."

In response to the call for tarmac - please do not tarmac - spare a thought for those who run as well as cycle. This is a great surface for running which avoids injuries associated by harder ground. Surely there are better solutions to the drainage problems?

I'm not sure who to moan to about this, but thought this is as good a place as any.
For the last 3-4 years I commute daily from glasson to Lancaster every working day, allyear.
My gripe is the condition of the track from Conder green to Aldcliffe, during periods of rain, or just after heavy rain, mostly in the winter.
I ride a hybrid commuter bike, but really it's so muddy on the track I should be on a full on mountain bike. It's for this reason that I'm forced to use the main A999 during most of the wet winter months.I don't like it, it's a really busy winding main road, not bike friendly.
Come on Lancaster City Coiuncil, why don'y you tarmac the track to Conder Green ?.You did it after Aldcliffe to the quay.
If you're really wanting to promote cycling in the area, please look after the regular commuters, and I'm sure it'll encourage more commuters out of their cars and onto bikes.

Re: Ref; dog walking

With regard to the dog walking problem a couple of posts down, I find this to be a particular problem at the foot of the Priory, i.e between Millennium Bridge and Long Marsh Lane. This problem also seems to have go much worse since the clocks went back and the evenings darkened. I don't think it is that the dogs are harder to see, more that the owners are harder to see and they are taking advantage of their anonymity.

Re: Dog Walkers on the Lune Cycle Path

Dog Walkers! Please take heed. I am fed up of last minute evasive action to manouvre around your pet dogs on the cycle path, when suddenly your pets appear from positions outside your attention. I stick to the appropriate side of the cycle path and like to maintain a constant, yet safe speed. Surely this is the idea of the cycle path? A safer route around this beautiful part of the world. It is only a matter of time before a a dog or more importantly a cyclist is seriously hurt. Please, please pay attention to your pets whereabouts whilst your on the cycle path. Those of you that do will always receive a friendly 'Thank You' from me as I pass. Has anybody else found this to be a constant issue?
