Twenty Club

twenty club logoWhat is the Twenty Club?

This is an informal meeting of cyclists who want to go on a more challenging ride locally (approx twenty miles - hence the name). Rides will be 'led' by the group and identified on a week by week basis and posted on this page or at www.celebratingcycling.org/posts.asp.

Please note if there is not a ride listed below it doesn't mean that there isn't one planned.

All welcome - however please note that these rides are likely to involve some or all of the following: hills, on-road riding. Road bike not essential but please ensure that your bike is in good condition. These rides are at a faster pace - not club fast, but not 8mph either.  These are not guided rides - cyclists ride at their own risk.

You can now join our Twenty Club email list to receive the latest information on the Twenty Club rides.

Spring Update

First Thursday Ride of the Year - Thursday April 1st
Now that the lighter nights are here the Twenty Club rides will return to Thursdays at 6pm.
As this is the first ride of the year we have planned to do a short one up into the Kellets and back - see route at
Please bring lights just in case.

Send us your ideas for new routes or post your route on bikely.com and send us the link.

Meet Thursdays at Millennium Bridge 6pm

January/February Update

deerThe twenty riders have been out every week in the first two months of the year, bar two when everywhere was covered in snow and ice.

The weather has been great - cold but beautiful and clear (for the most part anyway). On February 20th we're not sure who was more startled us or the group of 6-7 roe deer that we encountered on Long Lane, nr Quernmore (see right).

There will probably only be 4 more Saturday ride before we return to Thursday evenings. However hopefully we'll still have the occasional longer Saturday ride.

Autumn / Winter News

From October the twenty rides will take place on Saturdays at 10am from the Millennium Bridge unless otherwise stated. We anticipate returning to Thursday evenings at the end of March.

Meet Thursdays at Millennium Bridge 6pm

September 24th - 17.15 start
Please note the start time change to 17.15 at Millennium Bridge and let friends/colleagues know of the time change.

This is the final week of the Twenty Club weekday rides. There has been a lot of interest in running the rides at the weekend, so do not despair, Vive la Twenty Club. We'll ask at the final ride this week which day would be more preferable.

For Thursday's ride we intend to finish our summer with a ride up to Jubilee Tower where we hope to see a fantastic sunset. We've all increased our fitness levels to some degree since starting the Twenty Club back in June so don't be afraid to tackle the ascent. There is no harm in stopping on the way up, we do recommend it to take in some of the really great views. We can all congratulate ourselves on some great rides over the summer at the top. Depending on the time and light conditions we can either make the short return via Caton or the longer return via Dolphinholme - either way we will ensure we are riding in well lit conditions. See you at 17.15 on 24th at Millennium Bridge, Lancaster.

September 17th
Last week we chose a different route once we had met at Millennium Bridge so this week we will follow what should have been last weeks route. Simple, right? This is a hilly route and we'll probably head out to Galgate via Bowerham to save some time on the usual route out via the canal. If you are at Lancaster University you are more than welcome to join us as we pass through campus on Lights are really needed for the return back to Lancaster. See you there. Approx 20 miles.

September 10th
The sun is shining so let's get out and ride on some fantastic country lanes. We'll be heading over to Tinkers Lane via Galgate. The route from Galgate is now available on Bikely but we'll be meeting as usual at 6pm, Millennium Bridge, Lancaster. See you there. Approx. 20 miles.

August 13th
This week we will be attempting route 1 in our new Cycling for All Guide:2.
Down to Cockerham and Winmarleigh, then across to Scorton, returning to Lancaster via Galgate.
Approx 26 miles

August 6th
A lovely sunny evening and fairly short ride to Caton via Stodday, Conder Green and Littlefell Lane. Only minor mishaps including the ride 'leader' having a temporary loss of direction (tsk tsk) and someone's crank falling off - apart from that a good ride!

July 30th
Bikely is playing up again so this will have to be a text description:
Along RLMP north to end of route then along A683 to Hornby
Turn left onto Melling Rd and follow Route 90 through Gressingham to Arkholme
Continue along 90 to Docker Farm and west towards Borwick

After approx 1 mile turn left onto Kirkby Lonsdale Rd
Follow this road through Halton and contiue along western side of river
Return to Millennium bridge via Halton Rd, underpass and Lune Street
This is approx 26 miles

Littledale July2009July 23rd
Just under 22 miles following the RLMP to Conder Green and then across to Galgate - then taking Kit Brown Lane and Long Lane to reach Quernmore and then Rigg Lane and Littledale Road before descending into Brookhouse and returning along the RLMP.
See image right at Littledale 23 July 2009

July 16th
Due to bad weather and other commitments only 5 riders were present and only 4 finished (just a puncture!). Riders went Cockerham way I believe.

July 9th
Along Lancaster Canal - with visiting Cycling England board member John Grimshaw - to Hest Bank and then to Silverdale via Carnforth/Warton, then back through Carnforth, returning to Lancaster via Over Kellet

July 2nd
An easier ride this week heading north towards Denny Beck along the River Lune Millennium Path, through Halton then through the Kellets, before rejoining the RLMP at Woodys and returning to Lancaster.

June 25th
Ride went from the Millennium Bridge to Galgate, Fleece Pub, Dolphinholme to Plantation Lane near Abbeystead, Jubilee Tower, Quernmore, Long Lane/ Kit Brow to Galgate. We then returned to the Bridge via Conder Green and the river cyclepath.

June 18th
Thursday 18th June saw 17 riders take part in the first ride of the Twenty Club - to Dolphinholme and back. The forecast heavy showers didn't materialise until we were almost back home, and luckily they only lasted 10 minutes or so. We did then get to see a very nice rainbow afterwards.
