FAQs

If you have any burning questions that aren't answered below then please email mmoran@lancaster.gov.uk and we'll add to the list of FAQs below if suitable.
Q. What is the point of the Commuter Challenge?
A. More people cycling to work means a healthier and happier workforce. An increased number of cyclists in a workplace can also bring better facilities such as secure cycle parking and changing/shower rooms. We're aiming to get as many people cycling during the Commuter Challenge period as possible, particulary 'new' cyclists.
Q. Why is it different from last years Commuter Challenge?
A. We took on board all of the feedback from last year which in the main centred around people not being able to find another person that didn't already cycle to work (One person even told us they didn't have any friends!). This year we want as many people as possible to get involved so there is no requirement to get anybody else cycling to work but we'd really appreciate it if you could encourage your colleagues to cycle to work during the Challenge.
Q. How many entries into the prize draw do I get?
A. For the main prize of £250 cycle vouchers and the £50 cycle voucher you will receive one prize draw entry for every day you log at least one mile. For details of how to win one of the prizes on offer just click prizes above to find out more.
Q. When does the Commuter Challenge open and close?
A. The Commuter Challenge is open from 00:00 on Monday, 21st May 2010 and closes at 23:59 on Sunday 4th July June. We've given those who don't find out about the Challenge until during Bike Week to the middle of the following week to let us know how they went on.
Q. What is Dailymile?
A. Dailymile is a cool website which we've been using for a while to log our miles, whether that be for commuting or for some of the longer rides. We chose to partner with Dailymile for the Commuter Challenge because of how simple it is to use.
Q. I've registered with Dailymile but the Commuter Challenge is 'locked'?
A. When the Challenge period begins we'll send an invite to join the challenge at Dailymile. Until then we don't want to count any miles you might log before the Challenge starts.
Q. Why are my miles not registering for the Challenge?
A. Your logged miles won't register for the Challenge until you receive the special link which will be sent out on 21st June. If your miles aren't registering after this date then please ensure you are logging your miles as a 'Cycle' and NOT as a 'Commute'.
Q. Will you take a picture of me if I win?
A. Yes, of course! The local press are very interested in our Commuter Challenge and they'll be keen to get a picture of you with your prize! We'd also love to have your story on our own celebratingcycling.org website too!
Q. What if my workplace wins the Bike to Work Day, we've got 3,000 employees?
A. In the case of a very large organisation winning the Bike to Work Day we will offer the Bike to Work Day package to an individual department as we simply don't have the resources to offer it huge orgainsations.
Q. What if I only live 1 mile away from my workplace, can I still enter?
A. Yes, that's no problem. Our main interest for the Challenge is not in how far you cycle to work. Cycling to work over shorter distances is often quicker than traveling by car or using public transport. For the Challenge, Dailymile will round your commute to the nearest mile.
Q. I live in Manchester but commute from Lancaster Railway Station to Lancaster University, can I still enter?
A. Yes, to be eligible to win the Challenge prizes, the cycling part of your commute must take place within the District of Lancaster and Morecambe.
Q. Will I get bombarded with emails after registering?
A. No, absolutely not. We'll only email you in respect of the Commuter Challenge to give you updates on how the Challenge is going. We will send you a reminder to log your miles during the Challenge.
Q. Can I enter even if I don't have the internet?
A. Unfortunately not, to log your miles you need to register by clicking 'Entry Form' above and the follow the instructions in the email.
Q. Can I enter if I am a student?
A. No, this is a workplace challenge and we are focusing our efforts on people cycling to work for this initiative.
Q. How do I get more information on cycling to work for myself or for management at my workplace?
A. Easy, just email mmoran@lancaster.gov.uk or call 01524 582616 with your details and we'll be back in touch very soon. We also have a dedicated Cycling to Work section at www.celebratingcycling.org/work.
