Bike It - Cycle around the world!
This inter-schools competition was launched in 2007 by Lancaster City Council and Sustrans Bike It Officer, Kathy Bashford who invited round the world cyclist Alastair Humphreys to talk to pupils at the district’s Bike It schools about his own adventure which spanned 5 continents and 60 countries.
In 2009 the competiion went national with over 120 schools across England and Wales taking part.
Round the World Challenge 2009
Over the next month pupils at Local Bike It schools will be following in the footsteps of the cycling adventurer Alastair Humphreys who spent four years cycling 46,000 miles around the world. This huge feat was described by Sir Ranulph Fiennes as “the first great adventure of the new millennium”.
The race has been organised by the sustainable transport charity, Sustrans. The race aims to inspire and get pupils, parents and teachers cycling on a regular basis. Each time a pupil, parent or teacher cycles to school, miles will be added on to their school’s journey around the world. Over the next four weeks 19 Sustrans Bike It Officers will be aiming to get over 20,000 children cycling to and from school.
This is the third year that Lancaster and Morecambe Bike It schools have taken on the ‘Round the World’ challenge. Following the success in increasing cycle journeys to school the race that begun in Lancaster has now been taken up by Bike It Officers and schools nationally, so the school will be racing over 120 Bike It schools from across England to see who can complete this unique challenge first.

Update 2008
Congratulations Grosvenor Park who made it around the world first!
Here's where all the current 'round the world' schools have got to. Willow Lane will probably finish next week! The first 3 schools will have a Ben Slinger show at their school - good luck to all!

Cycle around the World
Bike It schools are competing to cycle around the world. Their trip is a virtual one following the route of Alastair Humphreys who really did cycle around the world, covering 46000 miles and 60 countries over 4 years (see website below).
Alastair agreed to come and launch the project in the schools. He captivated and inspired the pupils with tales of his adventure, then challenged them to do their own Round the World challenge.
Miles are added on each time a pupil cycles to school and double that number each time a staff member cycles to school. Each school has a notice board with a large map where the pupils and school community can follow the school's progress each day.
This is the 2nd time Bike It schools have cycled round the world. Last year there was a fantastic response and schools became quite competitive. The first - Ellel St John’s Primary School - made it during Bike to School week when each school was invited to double their miles for the week!. Each school that made it around the world by the end of the summer term received a prize of a Ben Slinger show.
Congratulations to the following schools for completing their trip around the world last year:
Ellel St John's Primary
Moorside Primary
Westgate Primary
Dallas Rd Primary
St Bernadettes Primary
