Bike It
Bike It is a nationwide scheme which aims to increase the number of young people cycling to school and on other journeys. Schools are selected for their enthusiasm for cycling and the potential to increase cycling.
The project started in 2004/5 with just four Bike It Officers based in Derby, York, Manchester and Bristol. They've worked with 40 schools in over 11 local authorities. Based on end of year bike shed counts cycling levels have quadrupled in the Bike It schools. There are now around 20 Bike It Officers in England. You can find out lots more here.
Introducing our Bike It officer
"Hi - I'm Kathy Bashford, the Bike It Officer for the Lancaster area and I am here to encourage cycling to school. I'm excited to be involved in both the Cycle Demonstration Town project and the Sustrans Bike It project. I am enjoying seeing lots more children cycling to school in the Lancaster area and hope they will now continuing cycling into old age..!
I am employed by Sustrans and work closely with the Cycle Demonstration Town team and County Council School Travel Plan Advisors."
