TravelSmart in Lancashire
TravelSmart is an Individualised Travel Marketing (ITM) programme which will start in Lancashire in Spring 2006. Over the next two years the Programme will target 50,000 households in Preston, South Ribble, Lancaster and Morecambe. The scheme will be delivered for Lancashire County Council by Sustrans and Socialdata (an international social and travel research consultancy).
What does TravelSmart mean?
TravelSmart is an innovative community-based programme to help people change the way they travel. TravelSmart works with households offering tailor-made information and support which allows people to walk, cycle and use public transport more often. It delivers real change by making people more aware of their daily travel choices through a process known as Individualised Travel Marketing (ITM).

TravelSmart has recently issued a paper regarding key findings of the baseline work undertaken in Lancashire.
Some key issues are:

Only 2% of people's day-to-day trips are made by bicycle (compared with 25% on foot and 8% by public transport)

The share of cycling is highes t on work trips (3%) compared to just 1% for education

Only 4% of people see themselves as regular cyclists and 15% as occasional users (6% in Lancaster)

On average a third of all car trips cold be replaced by cycling.
